Safety Manager

Don Bradway Don Bradway has spent more than 30 years in the safety field, starting as a firefighter/paramedic and then moving into the construction safety venue. He has worked for several major civil construction firms, two workers' compensation insurance companies, the largest California roofing company and on three awarding-winning light rail projects. This background gives Don a unique perspective on safety, having worked for the emergency services provider, the contractor, the owner, the consultant, the insurer and the broker.

He is a past chairman of the AGC of California Safety and Health Council and has been a member of the Construction Division of the National Safety Council since its inception. He has been a guest speaker multiple times at the Safety Council's annual conference, the American Society of Safety Engineers' Pacific Rim Governor's Safety Conference and the Chicago Construction Safety Conference, as well as the World of Concrete and the International Roofing Exposition.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Administration and a Certificate in Occupational Safety. Don has taught multiple safety courses, including trenching and excavation, lead in construction, the OSHA 10 and 30-hour construction safety courses and has been certified as a radiation safety officer.

Don specializes in safety training, believing that employees who are properly trained are much less likely to be injured or cause injuries on their job sites. He takes a practical approach to safety and strives to assist his clients with finding the most effective and efficient means of achieving job site safety. He is most comfortable joining with your management team and working to make your facility or job site as safe as possible, which in turn will reduce your bottom-line costs.

Safety Manager, Mainland January-June 2006 Watts Constructors, Inc., Novato, California

Responsible for safety and risk oversight of construction operations located on the United States mainland; responsibilities include writing and reviewing safety programs, safety training for employees, safety audits of company job sites; radiation safety officer for California operations.

Corporate Safety/Risk Manager 2004-2006 C.C. Myers, Inc., Rancho Cordova, California

Responsible for corporate safety and risk oversight of C.C. Myers, Inc., a bridge and highway builder; Myers Homes, residential home builder; CTM, concrete barrier rail contractor; Winchester Country Club and golf course. Responsibilities include writing and reviewing safety programs for each company, providing safety training for employees of each company, safety audits and correction reviews of job sites and facilities, review of risk exposures for insurance concerns and related duties.

Senior Construction Safety Specialist 2002-2004 Sacramento Regional Transit District, Sacramento, California

Duties included safety review of contract documents and contractors' submitted safety programs, oversight of contractor work activities as an adjunct to the contractors' safety programs, safety hazard audit and correction reviews, attendance at weekly construction progress meetings, safety training for Regional Transit employees.

Projects included the Sacramento Regional Transit District's South Sacramento Corridor and the Amtrak/Folsom Corridor light rail projects, the Metro Heavy Repair Facility and miscellaneous smaller construction projects. The South Sacramento Corridor received national recognition for its excellent safety record of having only two minor lost-time injuries in over three and a half years of work.

Construction Safety Manager 1993-1995, 1997-2002 Safework, Inc., Sacramento, California

Served as the Construction Safety Manager for the Sacramento Regional Transit District's South Sacramento Corridor light rail project. Duties included safety review of contract documents, oversight of contractor work activities, safety hazard audits and correction review, and safety training for the Construction Management team. Total contract costs in excess of $230 million. Also provided job site safety auditing services for Safework, Inc. clients in the northern California area. Safety and security manager for the construction manager of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Pasadena Blue Line light railway construction project. Responsible for all construction safety, emergency response preparation, OSHA compliance and environmental concerns on the $1 billion, 8+-year project. For Safework directly, served as construction safety management consultant for the City of Los Angeles Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Developed and implemented safety programs such as confined space entry, emergency response and hazardous material response for clients who interacted with these entities. Had over-sight responsibility for safety on job sites with recommendations being directed to clients or construction managers.

Director of Corporate Safety 1995-1997

Kasler Corporation/Washington Construction Group/Morrison Knudsen, Inc., Highland, California Responsible for the corporate safety program for a 500 employee, multi-state heavy civil and highway construction company with $225 million in sales per year. Projects included tunnel and track work with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Red Line subway project; the Cypress "B" and "F" projects for the I-880 freeway reconstruction in Oakland, California; the 180/168 Fresno freeway construction; McCarren Airport runway construction. Rewrote the corporate safety policies and procedures. Assisted corporate insurance department with investigation of liability claims.

Loss Control Manager 1988-1990, 1992-1993 Davey Roofing Inc., Irvine, California

Developed and managed the loss control program for a 500 employee, $36 million construction company. Shared responsibility with the Human Resources Manager for the workers' compensation program. Responsible for investigation and oversight of all liability claims. Wrote a complete injury and illness prevention program for field, administrative and fleet exposures. Completed a six-month Berlitz course in conversational Spanish.

Senior Loss Control Consultant 1986-1988, 1990-1992 Citation Insurance Company, Tustin, California Eagle Insurance Group, Long Beach, California

Serviced over eighty workers' compensation insurance clients for both U.S.L. & H. and California state act coverage. Clients included fleet, manufacturing, retail, on-shore and offshore construction and petroleum exposures. Premiums ranged from $50,000 to $4,000,000.

Developed and implemented the loss control programs for 125 retail, 5 warehouse and 3 manufacturing sites in 7 western states.

Developed and implemented safety training programs for on and offshore petrochemical facilities. Assisted supervising 14 medics stationed aboard offshore oil drilling facilities.
